Brassica (Bexley)

It takes a lot to get me to "settle" for counter service.  Brassica is one of the very few that wins me over in this department. I've been Instagramming it for awhile now so it's only fitting that my first blog post would pay homage to one of the most beautiful spaces in town, possibly in the Midwest.

The original Brassica, in Short North, is gorgeous.  But, it's long and narrow, and hard to photograph.  The latest Brassica, in Bexley is full of space and light, and it's absolutely gorgeous.  And the good news will continue: a third location, in Arlington, is scheduled to open later this fall.

Brassica does have plenty of brass in its decor, but that's not where the name comes from.  "Brassica" refers to the family of vegetables that includes broccoli, kale, and cauliflower. My typical order is a salad, which is really a bowl that features:

  • Rice and lentils
  • Dressed greens
  • Baba ganouj
  • Chicken
  • Roasted cauliflower and carrots
  • Feta
  • "Special sauce" - a sort of yum creaminess that binds everything together
Healthy, no??? And you can feel so good about eating here.  Eat local, friends.

Just entering the place is a delight for the eyes.  Look at all that gorgeous wood, brass, and touch of mid-century with the light fixture.

There is beautiful outdoor seating, too.  Clean and modern.  Here's another view as seen from the inside:

Upon entering, you're routed into the line by the beautiful subway tile. While subway tile has had more than its 15 minutes of fame, seeing it in this slightly sage, yet olive, color keeps it fresh and new. It feels very Wes Anderson to me.

Rounding the corner, into the line, is a solitary clock on that same tile  This is even more Wes Anderson.

Going through the line, you build your meal and once you pay you can be seated in this gorgeous space.

The color scheme is brass (obvi, and yes, that is part of the color scheme), olive, mustard, pops of intense orange, and wood tones.

The light fixtures are to die for...

There are high-top seats...

But mostly non-high-top seats. I neglected to get a picture of my actual booth, but they have have gorgeous marble tops and more brass lighting fixtures.

Everywhere you look is the gorgeous combination of natural materials and man-made ones, with this very unique color scheme and killer lighting.

This is what greets you going into the restroom area. It's hard to see, but those mirrors are rimmed in pops of intense orange.

A slight close-up of a previous photo.  This corner booth is right next to that amazing concrete block divider.

Balancing all those man-made materials are a smattering of plants:

Rounding out the front of the restaurant includes some beautiful bench seating and stools with mid-century hairpin legs.  Here's a closeup:

Somehow the sage/olive and turquoise work so well together.

Seriously, check out this place as soon as you possibly can. Delicious, healthy, gorgeous, local. That's more than a trifecta -- it's a jackpot.
